In this stage of my project, I wanted to explore how synthetic sounds could be used to create a natural environment without relying on field recordings. I focused on three elements: heavy rain, wind and birdsong.
My aim was to create a continuous soundscape in Ableton Live, using synthesis to build different natural sound textures. I was also interested in how these sounds could work together to create a sense of atmosphere and how their qualities could be changed through different parameters.
I started by creating the rain sound using Meld. My first challenge was to make the sound feel continuous rather than like a series of separate water drops. I experimented with the sound density and tone to create a fuller texture that could suggest heavy rainfall. I then developed the wind sound, focusing on a continuous texture and changes in intensity. I wanted the wind to feel like it was moving through the environment rather than remaining static.
For the birdsong, I experimented with short sounds at different pitches. At first, the sounds felt more like electronic beeps than bird calls. I then explored pitch variation, shorter notes and different intervals between sounds to make the result feel less mechanical.
After developing the three elements separately, I combined them into one soundscape. The heavy rain created the main background texture, the wind added movement and depth, and the birdsong introduced short, distinct sounds within the environment.
This experiment helped me understand that creating a natural-sounding environment is not simply about producing individual sounds. The relationship between different layers is also important. Their density, timing, pitch and intensity affect how the whole environment is perceived.
Working with synthesis also made me consider the difference between recording nature and constructing an artificial version of it. Although the sounds were generated electronically, combining them created an environment that could be recognised as a natural scene.
One challenge was making the synthetic sounds feel less mechanical. In particular, the birdsong required more variation to avoid sounding like a sequence of electronic notes. This showed me that small changes in pitch, timing and texture can make a significant difference.

Next, I hope to further refine the soundscape and explore how to control individual sound elements in real time. I then plan to gradually recreate the soundscape in Pure Data.
