
During the creative process, I sampled a dialogue from the film Memory by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It’s a piece about “the sound that only I can hear”: the heroine is repeatedly disturbed by a strange sound, and the doctor calmly tells her that many people in the city suffer from “delusions of grandeur”. The atmosphere of this dialogue almost coincides with the central ethos of my work.
The sounds of the tropical city I collected are inherently full of ambiguity: insects, people, temples, fans, power lines, footsteps, distant sirens …… They form a mixed, repetitive, and humid sonic zone.As these sounds overlap in my ears and reverberate in my head, reality begins to falter.I began to wonder: was what I was hearing, really there?Or is it just some sort of misplaced consciousness triggered by the heat and humidity?
On top of that, the dialogue fills the void of an otherwise monotonous melody on the sound, enriching it and making it less boring to listen to.I should also pay attention to the richness of sound layers in the creation of subsequent works, so that the listener can have a better auditory experience.
